Thank you to all the club members who made images available for the Lakefest 2010 Photographic Exhibition that was held at the Belmont 16s Sailing Club on 20th March.

A "viewers' choice" competition was held, with each viewer being able to submit one vote for the image of their choice. The diverse appeal of the wide range of images was reflected in the voting - 43 images received at least one vote. News from the Chair - March 17th 2010

The club meeting on 17th March approved the adoption of a revised constitution for our club. The majority of changes will simply enhance the smooth running of the club "behind the scenes". However, one change will be very visible - the official name of our club is now the BELMONT 16s PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB. This change will soon be reflected on our web site banner.

FIAP (Federation Internationale de l'Art Photographique)

Two of our club members have have acceptances at the next FIAP Biennial Exhibition to be held in Ireland. Ten prints were selected to represent Australia.

Chris Prior  " Wild Ride". Chris will place this image on Coppermine

John Bennett  "131 at Speed"

Congratulations to both Chris and John.

News from the Chair - February 9th 2010

Hello Everyone

Just a reminder that next Wednesday (17th Feb) we are starting the new component of our training/education sessions for members. In case you missed it - each month from February to November we will be meeting at the club from 4pm to approximately 6pm on our regular meeting dates for "discussions and ideas sharing". We will finish in time for you to have a meal at the club prior to the start of our "normal" competition meeting. As usual, we don't know which room we will be in until we arrive - but it will be one of the upstairs rooms.

The programme for these discussion sessions is included on the "Monthly training sessions" page of our web site - click on the "Training" button on the home page and then select the "Monthly sessions" link on the left of the page.

Some of these sessions, including the first one, will give you an opportunity to meet the judge for the night and learn something about his/her approach to photography.

Next week Des Crawley will share with us his ideas on the theme: 'inspiration - challenges - creative growth in photography'. This will include a strong recurring reference to his approach to portfolio development. Des will show some of his own work to help explain/elaborate ideas but he wanted me to emphasise to members that this "will not be a visual smorgasbord as a device to 'occupy' people".

You are welcome to bring some samples of your own work to this session (particularly if you are considering developing a themed portfolio). However, Des has emphasised that he does NOT want members to bring work that they have entered in this month's digital or print competitions.

By the way, Des's session next week is NOT simply a shortened version of his April workshop.

OTHER REMINDERS

Please have your entries in BEFORE 7pm - we need time to display the prints, scan the small prints, etc.

Please use the CURRENT entry form (which you can download from the web site). This makes the recorder's task much easier.

Please make sure you have your name and the image title PRINTED CLEARLY on the back of each print. Please also use a large arrow to indicate the top of the print.

Membership of the main club is now due - you must pay by the end of March if you want to continue entering our club competitions.

At our MARCH meeting we need to collect entries for Round 1 of the NPF competition and entries for the Lakefest Exhibition. Please refer to the web site (or ask a committee member) for further information.

Don't forget to visit Coppermine as often as you can and leave some comments on the wonderful new images that are being added.

Regards,

Roy Killen

News from the Chair- February 5th 2010

Hello everyone

Our club has been asked to put on a display of photographs at the Belmont 16s Club on Saturday 20th March. This will be part of the Lakefest celebrations being organised by the Belmont Chamber of Commerce.

There is a web site for Lakefest - www.lakefest.com.au

We would like to have a display of about 150 prints - so please consider making some of your prints available. We will have colour, monochrome, nature and small print sections in the exhibition. New members of the club are welcome to participate.

We have a normal club meeting on 17th March so entries for the exhibition will be collected on that night. You could simply enter the images you bring to our March monthly competition, or you may prefer to submit other images. At this stage, we are limiting the number of entries to three per person per section.

Please let me know if you are willing to participate in this event - and, if so, how many images you will submit.

Lakefest is designed to "showcase" Lake Macquarie - the exhibition is a great opportunity for us to showcase our club.

Thanks for your support.

Regards,
Roy

News from the Chair - February 3rd 2010

Hello Everyone,

At last count we had 75 club members. To assist the new members of the club to get to know the "old" members (and vice versa) it would be appreciated if all members could provide information for the "member profiles" section of the web site. All you need to do is have a look at some of the profiles that are already there and use them as a guide for the sort of information to put in your own profile. If you email the information to Keith Davey (keithdavey@belmont16footers-photoclub.com.au)) or Diane Schofield (dianeschofield@belmont16footers-photoclub.com.au) they will put it on the web site for you.

Many of our club members enter competitions outside the club, for example, the National competition held in conjunction with the Newcastle Show. We would like to recognise the achievements of our members in these competitions by starting an "achievements page" on the web site. So, if you have achieved any success in competitions beyond club level in 2010 please email the details to Keith Davey and he will put it on the web site.

I am looking for a couple of volunteers who are willing to learn how to operate the lights in the club auditorium so that we do not have to wait for a staff member when we want to turn the lights on/off.

I also need a couple of volunteers who are willing to learn how to operate the club's audio system so that we can have the judge use a lapel microphone,

If you can help, please let me know so that I can organise the training sessions.

Regards,
Roy

News from the Chair - January 2010

Hello Everyone,

Thank you to everyone who attending our first competition night of the year last night, and a special thanks to the 39 members who entered images. Congratulations to all those who received merits or honours – especial to the members who received their first awards last night.

Because of the size of our club we need to have certain rules and procedures to ensure that everything runs smoothly. To assist those club members who work hard to do all the “behind the scenes” activities that are necessary each month I would greatly appreciate it if everyone could note the following:

CLOSING TIME FOR ENTRIES

The closing time for entries is 7.00pm. We need the ½ hour between 7.00pm and 7.30pm to check all the entries against the entry forms, scan the small prints ready for projection and place the large prints on the stands. If you put your entries in late it causes unnecessary stress to those who are trying to complete these tasks.

MONTHLY COMPETITION ENTRY FORMS

Please use the latest entry forms as they have been redesigned (from last year) to match the score sheets that the recorders use. If you use the correct forms it makes it easier for the recorders. Please note that there are two versions of the entry forms - one for the odd months (with a nature section) and one for the even months (with an EDI section). You can download the entry forms from the club web site www. belmont16footers-photoclub.com.au by clicking on the “Competitions” button on the home page, then click on the “monthly competition” link (on the left of the page) and then click on the “Entry form” link.

KEEPING TRACK OF YOUR EDI ENTRIES

Please keep a record of the exact image names that you use for your EDI entries so you can put the correct information on your entry forms. Once entries close for the month (after 6pm this Friday for the February competition) the EDI competition albums will not be visible on Coppermine until after the competition night on which they are shown. (During that time the entries will be judged.)

SET SUBJECT DEFINITIONS

In case you have not found them at the end of the monthly competition rules, here are the set subject definitions for this year:

April – An emotion. The image must portray a person or people expressing an emotion such as anger, joy, despair, embarrassment, gratitude, pleasure, etc.

August – Kaput. The image must illustrate the idea that something which is “kaput” is broken, ruined, not working, unable to function, incapacitated, wrecked, destroyed, etc.

Thank you for your assistance on these matters.

Regards,
Roy

We Need Your Profile

The PROFILES section of this web site is set up to help members get to know one another. The club membership continues to grow each month so it is handy to be able to put a face to a name and have some idea of the photographic interests of other club members. All you need to do is check the Profiles section for some examples and then email Roy Killen your details.

Please note: To protect the privacy of members, the email addresses on the Profiles pages are set up as your "club email address" in the form membername@belmont16footers-photoclub.com.au and any mail sent from this web site (or by anyone else using your club address) is automatically forwarded to your nominated email address. This is set up for you; you don't have to do any setting up or make any modifications to your existing email system. Your club email will automatically have an antispam filter and an antivirus filter applied to it.
