Andrew Styan

Joined the Club: 2008

Photography experience:
Whilst I had an interest in photography in my teens, having inherited some darkroom gear, I never really pursued it until my semi-retirement in early 2008. There were plenty of holiday snaps and family pictures in the intervening 35 years but not much that really went beyond a ‘snap’.

And now, being a ‘techo’ (formerly a metallurgist in the steel industry), I enjoy exploring the science behind what makes a good image – both the photographic and the image ‘enhancement’ aspects – but the opportunity to work with other budding and master passionate photographers through the club is taking me beyond the science and tapping into the creative side I never knew I had.

Main photographic interests:
Landscape and travel photography but I’d like to improve in all areas

Photographic equipment:

I don’t remember what I used as a teenager but I think it’s buried in a cupboard somewhere (obviously not as iconic as the Box Brownies of other more ‘mature’ members) I’ve owned 2 Pentax SLRs; both still work but now have mould on the lenses. Now loving my new Canon and slowly building up a collection of gear, the latest being a fantastic wide angle lens (well I borrowed that from my daughter, but they say that possession is nine-tenths of the law…don’t they ?).

Current position in Club: EDI Officer and committee member.
